How my 7th birthday Created one of my Favorite Childhood Memories

I don’t remember much from my childhood. I have a few memories of things that stood out, for good or bad, but not a lot. It is like my mind retained bits and pieces of my early years, and everything else is a blur. I know a lot of things happened, but I don’t remember much. Maybe that’s how it is when you grow up without significant hiccups or worries, just living the typical day-to-day stuff.

But I do remember clearly the day when I turned seven years old. It was one of the happiest days of my life up until that point. And a day that still makes me smile when I think back to it. It was the first time I remember crying of excitement, of happiness.

I was so excited about my 7th birthday that I woke up before sunrise that day. I stayed in my bed very still, hearing my little heart pounding, waiting for my mom, dad, and brother to come into my room to wake me up singing happy birthday — as they did every year following our family tradition. It wasn’t the first time they did that, but it was the first time that I would lock the whole ceremony in my mind.

Our tradition was, rain or shine, the person celebrating another turn around the sun would be woken in bed by the other family members storming in and singing happy birthday.

Family, traditions, love
Family, traditions, love
