Dear Pete [Souza],
I have been following your work for a while now. Besides being an avid follower on Instagram, I have recently watched your documentary, The Way I See It. The documentary is simply brilliant. Not only it shows us more about your work and yourself as a person, but it also reminds us of how important it is for us to have a president who has good character.
I’m an immigrant. I moved to the US from Brazil almost ten years ago, when things were still looking steady around here. And just for some background, in 2008, still in Brazil, I was already cheering for Obama. My husband and I watched the inauguration in 2009 with proud faces and teary eyes, even though we were not yet aware we would be moving to the US in the future. For us, even from far away, Obama’s win was a massive step for the American people. A turn in the right direction toward progress, open-mindedness, tolerance, and, most of all, no prejudice.
Following Obama’s presidency, watching his speeches, and seeing how he led the nation with such charisma, dignity, empathy, and respect was inspiring. Especially for us, since in Brazil, most politicians are the polar opposite of trustworthiness.
When my husband received a job offer to come to Silicon Valley in 2011, we didn’t think twice to say yes. In a matter of two weeks, we organized paperwork, said goodbye to loved ones, and off we went to the land of opportunity.
It was an honor for us to have such an opportunity. Many people in several countries dream about the chance to come to America. And…
